Different GIS and 3D modeling platforms accept and produce certain file types, which means that to use multiple platforms, you'll need to know how to convert between these different file types.

This article will walk you through converting a .LAS or .LAZ file to .XYZ so that you can move between platforms with your data.

There are many ways to do this conversion, such as using las2DEM, but this article will be working with CloudCompare.

  • CloudCompare on your computer. Don't have it? Follow these instructions to install it.

 1. Launch CloudCompare.

2. In the Toolbar, navigate to File > Open > then import your .LAS/.LAZ file.

3. Once the data has been imported, export it again to the desired file type by navigating to File > Save.

4. From the "Save as type" drop down menu, choose "ASCII cloud (... *.xyz ...)" and click Save.

I still can't do it!
