The ability to change a remote controller quickly and reliably on site can mean the difference between completing a survey on time and missing a crucial deadline.

This article takes you through the process of linking a controller to your drone.

Prerequisites:

  • DJI Phantom 4 Series, Inspire 2, or Matrice 200 Series Drone
  • A compatible controller for your craft
  • DJI Go 4 installed on an IOS or Android device

Check your remote controller model

DJI has released a range of controllers for their small- to medium-sized craft. If you are looking at purchasing a replacement or would like to check if an existing controller you own will be compatible with your craft, use the table below. The model number is located on the back of the remote.

Please note that when purchasing a controller the GL300E and GL300K models with a built-in display do not allow the user to connect an iPad or to use DJI GS Pro. 

Linking a Remote Controller

Typically, when you receive a new craft the remote will already be bound to the craft, if you are using a new remote or would like to swap remotes between different craft you can do so by linking the remote controller.

Instructions:

  1. Power on the remote controller and connect your device to the USB port.
  2. Launch the DJI Go 4 application and power on the craft.
  3. Enter the camera view and tap on the controller icon along the top of the screen to bring up the controller menu.
  4. Locate the Linking Remote Controller button at the bottom of the menu, tap it and confirm the radio settings to start a 60-second timer.
  5. Locate the Link Button on the craft and press it to start the linking process. 

Where is the link button on my drone?

Phantom 4 Series: Located above the USB port. You may need a small tool to press the button properly, but if necessary, a pen or paper clip can be used instead.

Matrice 200 Series: Located under the cover at the back of the craft, to the right of the USB port.

Inspire 2: Located above the USB port switch.

6. Once the remote controller status light has changed to green, the remote and craft have been bound together and the remote will no longer function with the craft that it was previously bound to.

Troubleshooting

Occasionally, the controller can experience issues with connectivity to the craft or to the DJI Go 4 application. First, check that you have a functioning USB cable and the correct firmware on the craft and controller, as a faulty cable or firmware mismatch are most likely things to cause issues. If the issue still persists you can then attempt a hard reset of the remote controller:

  1. Turn on the remote controller and leave the craft off.
  2. Press and hold the following—C1, C2, Record, and Camera Settings Dial.
  3. While holding the buttons mentioned above, turn off the remote and turn it back on again.
  4. The status light should now be blue. Restart the controller again and check to see if the issue has been resolved.
