This quick video covers the steps you need to take to upload a LAS/LAZ file into Propeller to create a 3D terrain.

1. Select your file and prepare for upload

To upload a point cloud in LAS/LAZ format into Propeller head to the top of your screen and click on Data Processing > Create A New Dataset.

On the next screen select Point Cloud Upload from the list of options. To upload the file you can either:

  • Drag and drop your preprocessed LAS/LAZ file onto the browser screen
  • Click on the grey box to browse and select an LAS or LAZ file from your computer

Once you have selected your file we'll perform some quick validation checks. You will be able to see if your file has passed the checks at the bottom of your screen, under the heading File validation.

Troubleshooting tip: Site looks in the wrong location?

If the data looks like it's in the wrong the location when it's been uploaded then check if the coordinate system is the same as the site to which you are uploading to.

The point cloud you are uploading must be in the same coordinate system as the site you are uploading.

2. Select an elevation model filter and output formats.

You will then be asked if you want to keep the original “ground” classification from your point cloud. If you click no, you will be given the option to add a filter to your elevation model.

If your point cloud is unclassified or you are unsure as to whether it’s classified or not then we recommend that you select the ‘No’ option—in this instance, we will simply use all points in the cloud to generate a surface.

If you select yes you can select what you would like to filter out. This includes; equipment, vegetation, structures, or everything.

3. Upload your Point Cloud

You are then given the option to review the details of your upload before submitting it to Propeller. Please check these details before hitting submit.

Once you have submitted your data we'll do the rest! During this step please don’t close or navigate to another tab or you will be required to resume the upload process from the beginning.

We will notify you via email when your data is ready.

4. View your point cloud as 3D terrain

Once your point cloud has been processed you can view it in Propeller by heading to the viewer. You will receive the tiled point cloud + DEM as a layer in the viewer and the generated surface DEM as a download.

The terrain surface generated by your point cloud will be invisible by default, simply click any of the elevation/gradient map layers to see the surface colorized.
