How to Adjust Mobile Network Settings for your DirtMates

This article provides a comprehensive guide to installing and configuring a self-provided LTE SIM card in your DirtMate device. To start, you'll need to request extra SIM cards for this purpose through your organization's cellular plan. Please ensure these cards meet the specifications and adhere to the limitations outlined in the following sections.

Specifications

To ensure proper functionality, please adhere to the following SIM card specifications:

SIM Size

Your DirtMate device requires a Nano SIM card.

SIM Roaming Capabilities

Enabling SIM roaming is highly recommended. This feature enables the SIM card to connect to alternative networks when your primary network is out of range, eliminating the need to swap SIMs at different project sites.

Confirm with your IT department if roaming is included in your organization's cellular plan.

SIM APN Settings

In some cases, an Access Point Name (APN) configuration is required for the DirtMate device to connect to the mobile network. If your phone uses the same cellular plan, you can likely find the correct APN within its settings.

If you need assistance identifying the correct APN, please get in touch with your IT support team.

Limitations

Important: Do not tamper with or modify SIM slot 1 in any way, as this may void your warranty. Propeller installs a SIM card in this slot at the factory for general customer use, but it might not be optimal for all specific customer or project requirements. SIM slot 2 is provided for your own LTE SIM card.

Process

Because DirtMate devices receive their configurations remotely ("over the air"), a stable internet connection is essential for any new settings to be successfully implemented. This means that to initially configure a SIM slot and its associated APN, you might need to temporarily connect the DirtMate device to a mobile hotspot to provide the required internet access.

Simplified Configuration via Propeller Network

For the most straightforward setup of your DirtMate, you can use a specially designated network. To do this, configure your mobile hotspot with the following credentials:

  • Network Name (SSID): propeller
  • Password: propeller

Once the DirtMate device connects to this "propeller" hotspot and the hotspot has internet access, the device will automatically retrieve and install any new configuration settings.

iPhone and Android

iPhone

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Select About
  4. Tap Name and change it to propeller. This name will be your hotspot's SSID
  5. Return to the main Settings menu and find Personal Hotspot
  6. Within Personal Hotspot settings, ensure the password is set to propeller. You can change it if necessary.
  7. Enable Personal Hotspot

Android

The location for changing the network name (SSID) and password varies by device. Typically, you can find these settings within Network Sharing or a similarly named section in your device's Settings. Look for options related to Mobile Hotspot or Tethering. Change the network name (SSID) to propeller and the password to propeller.

Once both the name and password are correctly set to "propeller" and your hotspot is enabled, your nearby DirtMate devices should connect automatically.

Inserting the SIM card

Warning!! - DirtMate should be off for this

Locate the SIM Slots

Your DirtMate device has two SIM card slots, both located beneath a gasket-sealed cover on the bottom of the unit.

Prepare Your Tools

You will need a T20 torque drive bit to remove and reinstall the cover screws. It is strongly recommended to use hand tools for this process to avoid over-tightening.

Remove the Cover

Carefully unscrew and remove the gasket-sealed cover on the bottom of the DirtMate.

Insert Your SIM Card

Insert your self-provided SIM card into SIM slot 2. To ensure correct orientation, you can refer to the existing SIM card in slot 1 before removing it (if applicable).

Reseal the SIM Slots

Once the SIM card is securely in slot 2, carefully reinstall the gasket-sealed cover.

Secure the Cover

Hand-tighten the screws, ensuring the cover is seated evenly and fully sealed.

Power On

Turn on your DirtMate device and allow it approximately 30 seconds to boot up.

Open DirtMate Management

Launch the DirtMate Management software or web interface. Navigate to DirtMates and click or tap on the DIRTMATES tab.

Select Your Device

Find and select your specific DirtMate device from the list. Then, navigate to its SETTINGS tab.

Verify Online Status

Confirm that the DirtMate device shows as "Online."

Enable Editing

Tap the pencil or edit button, typically located in the top right corner, to enable modification of the device settings.

Mobile Network Settings

Locate the "Mobile network settings" section. Here, you will be able to:

Select SIM slot 2 and enter the APN (Access Point Name) associated with your self-provided SIM card.

Save Configuration

After you select SIM slot 2 and enter the APN, please be sure to tap the SAVE button. This action will send the new configuration settings to your DirtMate device.
