Using a CSV For Bulk Point Data Import

Learn how to utilize the CSV bulk import feature for measurements, a powerful tool that streamlines the process of importing large point datasets into your portal for easier spatial data visualization and analysis, eliminating manual entry.

Before you begin your CSV import, consider creating a custom point template to ensure all your imported points are styled according to your specific preferences right from the start. Defining a template beforehand allows you to control aspects such as color, icon style, and label visibility, guaranteeing a consistent visual representation of your data upon import. While creating your own custom template offers maximum control over your point aesthetics, you also have the option to utilize one of the predefined options in the Properties panel.

Importing Point Data from CSV

Click the UPLOAD button, and choose Measurements.

A window will open. Drag and drop or navigate to the CSV file you want to import.

Please note there is a 500 point limit per file.

Upload CSV.png

Upon uploading your CSV, the system will display a preview of the first few rows of your data. From the Select measurement template dropdown, you can choose from several options. If you created a custom template earlier in the CSV upload process, you will also see that template listed as an available option within this dropdown.

Next, connect the columns in your CSV file to the matching fields from your template.

If your CSV file includes a header row in the very first line, click the Use first row as header checkbox.

Available fields

Point Name, Easting, and Northing are mandatory for import. If your template includes a text field labeled 'Description,' the data in that field will be displayed. The 'Custom Description' field will always appear, but is optional for import.

Point Name: Choose the CSV column that contains a unique identifier or name for each point. This allows for easy identification and referencing of individual measurements.

Easting: Select the column that holds the easting coordinate values for your points. Ensure that the units in your CSV are consistent with your project's coordinate system.

Northing: Map this to the CSV column containing the northing coordinate values. Again, verify unit consistency.

Description: This field allows you to import textual information associated with each point.

The system supports mapping multiple CSV columns to the Description field. This is useful for bringing in various attributes or notes related to each measurement, even if your template isn’t set up to accept multiple Description fields.

Custom description: Use this field to map additional columns in your CSV file that you want to display. If you’ve assigned a header row, custom descriptions will take on the title specified in the header.

Ignore: For any columns in your CSV file that do not represent relevant measurement data you wish to import, simply select the "Ignore" option from the dropdown menu. This ensures that these columns are skipped during the import process.

In an upcoming release, you will also have the ability to map a CSV column containing elevation (or Z) values. For now, we encourage users to map their elevations to a text box/description field.

With all relevant CSV columns mapped to template fields, click FINISH. This will process your data, and a new folder will be generated and named after the original CSV file. These points will be visible on the map by default. To hide them, simply toggle off the eye icon associated with the newly created folder.

You can also select from a set of predefined icons, allowing you to represent different types of measurements with distinct visual symbols. You can also toggle to display a label next to each point on the map.
